Mindflex by Mattel
Everyone’s talking about the new Mindflex toy from Mattel. It’s the first mass market toy that claims to read your mind. You put on the headset and connect the earclips on your ears. Then as you concentrate, you can change how high a small ball floats and maneuver it through a maze of tricks. Does it work? Well, we’re pretty skeptical about things like this, but well, see for yourself:

We tested the toy with several different people and they all report, with varying degrees of success, that they were able to make the ball float higher or lower depending on their concentration. None of them had any preparation and none of them had even heard of the toy before. So what you’re seeing is the raw, first try for all of these people.
How does Mindflex work? Mattel claims that it reads the low-level brain waves we all emit and speeds up or slows the fan that keeps the ball in the air. We were skeptical until we realized that EEG machines have been reading brain waves and moving needles on a graph for a long time. Given modern mass production techniques, it makes sense that a relatively inexpensive toy that “reads the mind” could be produced.
But if you saw the video, well, it’s hard to argue with success. All we know is that it sure was a lot of fun.
